A Q&A with Dr. Amy Moreno

Q: What inspired you to become a physician?

A: I was always interested in math and science and, initially, I wanted to become an engineer. After volunteering in the ER of a small community hospital, I decided I wanted to go into medicine. I really loved learning more about the many interesting cases and the diversity of patients I encountered. It’s such a rewarding career.

Q: How did you start your career?

A: I studied biology at Virginia Commonwealth University and then attended the Medical College of Virginia. After completing my residency in family medicine, I worked as a family practice clinician for 20 years before joining CVS Health as a medical director. I joined Signify Health very recently.

Q: What excites you most about your new role at Signify Health?

A: There is something special about meeting members in their homes. In addition to walking through their medical history, performing a physical examination, medication review, and providing diagnostic and preventive screenings, clinicians are able to identify unmet needs that may not be apparent in an office visit.

I am excited to support our Signify Health clinicians by refining and developing clinical guidelines that serve as valuable, easy-to-use resources in their daily work. Our clinicians bring diverse skills and training and having clear, up-to-date guidelines helps create consistency while allowing them to focus on performing a comprehensive visit with members. My goal is to make their jobs easier by providing concise, accessible clinical  guidance which ensures we are all on the same page.

Q: From your perspective, what is the value of the In-Home Health Evaluation (IHE)?

A: We have a wonderful opportunity to build trust with health plan members and identify the most important next steps for their care and how to address unmet needs. Through the IHE, Signify Health clinicians can support the work of primary care providers (PCPs) by flagging problems not yet identified and encouraging people to get the follow-up care they need.

From a PCP perspective, the results of the IHE and any additional preventive or diagnostic screenings provide valuable information about their patients. That information is helpful and provides a more complete picture of an individual’s health.

Q: What advice do you have for clinicians who are just starting their careers at Signify Health?

A: My advice would be to keep the member at the center of our focus. Stay curious about the needs of the member and find the opportunities to improve care. I appreciate the contributions each clinician brings to achieving our mission of finding care gaps and coordinating care for members. Signify Health has a clinical team here to support our clinicians and we value the time and dedication each clinician provides every day across the United States.

Q: What are your interests outside of work?

A: I love hiking and playing pickleball. I also enjoy spending time with my children and our dogs in our home in Virginia.
